Why binoculars are a pain in the neck
____________________________________________________
Posted: 20th October 2006

There's no doubt about it, you get to see a lot more wildlife with binoculars. You spot things which you'd otherwise completely miss. Of course the big drawback with binoculars is carrying the flippin things around. Having that weight around you neck all day is quite literally... well a pain in the neck.

A nature warden friend told me a little secret to relieving this problem. Just tie one end of a piece of string to your trouser belt at the back, and the other end to the binocular strap
at the back of your neck. Pull it taught and then tie it off. This will shift the weight of the binoculars off your neck and onto your trousers. It also has the added ‘cheesecutter
effect’ of drawing your trousers right up between your bum cheeks. The theory is great, but in reality it's no fun waddling around the countryside strung up like an oven ready chicken with your trousers up round your chest.

Just recently I discovered a much better alternative. I’d just about given up carrying my binoculars around with me in the field when I found a good quality pair of binoculars that
weigh only 150g
. To give you an idea how lightweight these things are, 150 grams is roughly the same as a mobile phone. Do you think you could carry one of those things around all day? Course you could. Probably wouldn't even notice it was there. It's the same with these binoculars.

The problem with some other lightweight binoculars is that they're often light on quality. Not with this pair. The magnification power is 8 times, which is great for use in the field, and they’re fully waterproof too. Useful with our climate! The fully coated glass lenses have individual eyepiece focusing, and they come with their own soft carrying case to protect them. The case has a nifty loop to attach to your trouser belt. Because these binoculars only weigh 150g, you won't find them pulling your trousers down either.

By now, you might have guessed I really like these bins, and needless to say we've added them to the UK Safari Nature Shop. They're called simply 'Pocket-sized Waterproof Binoculars', and they'll also be on my Christmas list this year
(members of my immediate family take note). Be sure to check them out for yourself, but do it soon as stocks are limited.
