Moth Cinnabar Moth

To find cinnabar moths, just look for the bright yellow flowers of the Ragwort plant. These moths are nearly always on or near the plants - click here

 

Latin name: Tyria jacobaeae

Size: Wingspan up to 45mms

Distribution: Found in most parts of the UK. In Scotland mainly in the south.

Months seen: May to July

Food: The yellow/orange and black striped caterpillars feed on ragwort, and sometimes groundsel or coltsfoot.

Habitat: Waste ground, fields and gardens.

Special features: This is one of the most frequently seen day-flying moths in the UK. Mainly because of its bright colouring. The cinnabar also flies at night.

Click for a better viewThe caterpillars of the cinnabar feed mostly on ragwort. Toxins in the plant help to protect the caterpillars, as it make them extremely distasteful to birds.
