Latin name: Asio otus
Size: Approximately 35cm. Wingspan around 90cm.
Distribution: Found through most of the UK except north Scotland, South
Wales and the south west of England.
Months seen: All year round.
Habitat: Found mainly in coniferous woodland where there is open
countryside/farmland close by.
Food: Mice, voles and small birds.
Special features: Not common, and nocturnal, so the long-eared owl can
be difficult to find. Smaller than the Tawny Owl. When
perched it can be recognised by the bright orange eyes and long 'ear' tufts
which give its name. In fact they aren't ears - just feathers - which can be
raised or lowered depending on the mood of the owl.
