Scientific name:  Sphaerophoria scripta

Size:  Wingspan approximately 15mm.  Body up to 22mm

Distribution:  Found in most parts of England, Wales, and parts of Scotland

Months seen:  May to November

Life span:  Up to 6 weeks

Habitat:  Meadows, gardens and waste ground

Food:  Nectar and pollen

Special features:  The male Long hoverflies get their name from their long, narrow cylindrical body which is noticably longer than the wings.  The females have a broader body.  The markings can vary, but generally the abdomen is yellow with four black bands
