It Used To Be
( A Piece of time )

It used to be not long ago
That we could freely come and go
Around our village fresh and green
A vehicle hardly ever seen
But now our pavements bare the scars
Of damage caused by motor cars
Our Orchards gone and in their place
Stand bright new houses, what a waste
But this is progress so they say
A piece of time goes every day

It used be a tranquil place
A smile, a nod, no airs and grace
A lazy chat across the wall
What has happened to it all
The pride has gone from every street
And litter clutters round your feet
But this is progress so they say
A piece of time goes every day

It used to have its country roots
With muddy paths and wellie boots
But that has passed and on the scene
Comes barbour coats all nice and clean
The hedges gone, not overgrown
And hear I sit and moan and moan
But this is progress so they say
A piece of time goes every day.
