The Scorpion Files

UK Safari Tip:
Like other species of scorpions, European scorpions glow bright blue-green under UV light, so they're easy to find in the dark.

Latin name: Euscorpius flavicaudis

Size: Approximately 33mm.

Distribution:
Found in the Docklands area of south east England.

Months seen: All year round.

Habitat: Cracks in old walls.

Food: Small insects, spiders, woodlice and other scorpions.

Special features: European scorpions have a black body and tail, with tan coloured legs and stinging organ.

Unlike other scorpions the European scorpions rarely use their stinging organ. They catch and dispatch their prey with their claws.

These tiny scorpions arrived in the UK by boat, from the Mediterranean, around two hundred years ago. Although they've got eight legs they don't move about much. They prefer to sit and wait for prey to come within grabbing distance.

European scorpions have not spread to other parts of the UK because our wet climate is unsuitable for them.
