Latin name: Netta rufina
Size: Approximately 55cms.
Distribution: Found mainly in central and southern England.
Months seen: Can be seen all year round, although some birds are winter
visitors and only seen from September to April.
Food: Vegetation
Habitat: Lakes, reservoirs and gravel pits
Special features: Differs from the Pochard
in that it is a larger bird
The female
(left) has has dark brown head with pale grey coloured
cheeks.
The male (top) has a bright orange coloured head - hence the name.
