Quick Facts

Scientific name:  Theridion blackwalli

Size:  2.5 to 5mm

Distribution:  Scarce, found in parts of England and Ireland

Months seen:  Mainly from May to July

Habitat:  Found around buildings, gravestones and on low growing vegetation

Food:  Small invertebrates

Special features:  Tangle Web Spiders are so called because of the criss-cross way they build their webs.

The abdominal pattern can be variable - sometimes lighter - sometimes all black.  The carapace markings are always the same, but are generally darker in the females.  The legs are pale brown with some darker annulations.
