Scientific name:  Parus ater

Size:  Approx 11cm

Distribution:  Found throughout the UK

Months seen:  All year round

Habitat:  Parks, gardens, open woodland and areas with hedges and scrub

Food:  Invertebrates and seeds

Special features:  Coal Tits are the smallest members of the tit family in the UK.  They're normally found in coniferous woodlands and plantations, but in winter time will visit garden bird tables for nuts and seeds.

Coal Tits have a very high pitched call which sounds something like "tsseee".
