Colour Anomalies - Starling

Identify It >   Colour Anomalies >   Starling >

Not all starlings conform to the regulation colour scheme.  The photos above show an all white starling (spotted in Kent), and an albino starling complete with pink eyes (spotted in Powys).

The ginger headed starling (spotted in Newquay) has been feeding on phormium (New Zealand flax) nectar and has simply got pollen all over its face.  Kathryn Marsh wrote to tell us that both Starlings and Sparrows have discovered this particular food source and are regularly pollinating these plants in the UK and Ireland, which is why the flax is beginning to spread so much faster and becoming invasive in certain areas
