Fungi Death Cap

Death Cap - Photo © Copyright 2005 Malcolm Greaves Photo: Malcolm Greaves

UK Safari Tip:
To help you identify fungi there's a superbly illustrated fold out chart in the Nature Shop - click here

Latin name: Amanita Phalloides

Size: Can grow to 15cms tall, with the cap reaching a diameter of around 12cms.

Distribution: Found in most parts of the UK.

Months seen: July to November

Habitat: Deciduous woodlands. Frequently found beneath oak trees.

Special features: Poisonous. Eating just one of these toadstools is enough to kill an adult. They contain what are known as 'amatoxins' which destroy the liver and kidney.

The cap is a yellow-green colour with darker streaks from the centre outwards. They are dome shaped when young, but flatten out as they mature. The gills are white, and the stem is whit with some grey-brown zig-zag markings near the base.
