Latin name: Humulus lupulus
Size: Grows to a height of 6 metres
Distribution: Found in many parts of England and Wales
Flowering Months: July to August
Habitat: Hedgerows and thickets
Special features: Used in the brewing of beer since the late 1500's.
Most of the plants growing wild are escapes from cultivation.
The female flowers ripen to form small, artichoke-shaped fruits. It's these
which contain the aromatic oils giving beer its flavour.
