bee Hornet Attacks Butterfly

Identify It >   Invertebrates Section >   Hornets >   Hornet Attacks Butterfly >

This Peacock butterfly was feeding on a buddleia bush when it got pounced on by a Hornet.  The two insects fell to the ground where the Hornet quickly removed the butterfly's head, legs and wings.  It then cut up the rest of the butterfly's body into small pieces and shaped the meat into a ball for easy transportation back to the nest.

Just before take off it shaves the remaining fur off of the meatball.  This is probably to make it more digestible for the hungry hornet grubs back at the nest.  It may also make it lighter and more streamlined for the flight.
