Latin name: Pica pica
Size: Approximately 40cms.
Distribution: Found over most of the UK except for some parts of N.W. Scotland
Months seen: All year round
Food: Insects, worms, seeds and carrion.
Habitat: Fields, parks and gardens.
Special features: The black and white plumage of the magpie is very
distinctive. In good light the wing feathers have an iridescent blue sheen, and
the tail has an iridescent green sheen. The tail of the magpie accounts for
about half of the birds length.
