UK Safari Tip:
To help you identify house and garden spiders there's a superbly illustrated fold out chart in the Nature Shop - click here

Latin name: Pisaura mirabilis

Size: Approximately 15mms long.

Distribution: Found in England, Scotland and Wales. Absent in Northern Ireland.

Months seen: Between May and July

Habitat: Found in woods and on heathland.

Food: Flies and other small insects. It uses quick sprinting and strength to overpower its prey.

Special features: The males spiders take on a big risk when attempting to mate with a female.

Sometimes after mating the female will eat the male. To prevent this from happening the male presents the female with a gift, usually a dead fly. It is hoped that by satisfying her hunger before mating he will not become her next meal.

Click for a better viewThe female carries her eggs in a ball shaped, pea-sized sack with her. Just before the babies hatch she builds a silk tent and puts them inside for protection.
