Latin name: Motacilla alba

Size: Approximately 18cm long with a wingspan of around 30cm.

Distribution: Found throughout the UK, except in winter when it is absent from parts of northern Scotland.

Months seen: All year round.

Habitat: Grassland, farmland, parks and gardens.

Food: Insects.

Special features: Sometimes called the 'white wagtail'. The name really says it all. It's a small bird with black plumage on its back, shoulders and bib, and white cheeks, forehead and underparts. The tail hardly ever stops wagging up and down.
