How to Make a Christmas Tree "Sparkler"

UK Safari Tip:

Decorating the Christmas tree is an enjoyable activity which everyone likes to get involved in. The finished tree adds a certain warmth to any building. While it's convenient to buy decorations off the shelf, decorating the tree with ornaments you've made yourself is much more satisfying. This simple project involves making a tree decoration from an ordinary pine cone.

For each "Sparkler" you will need: one dry pine cone, spray adhesive, glitter, 10cm length of thread (preferably elasticated), beads, tube of impact adhesive.

Make sure the pine cones you use are well dried and fully open. If you use damp ones they will open up, due to the warmer air indoors, so any glitter or beads you apply will drop off. If necessary put them in a hot oven for a few minutes. This will kill off any creepy-crawlies inside and open up the cone fully.

Bits needed

First take the length of thread and tie it in a loop. This loop will be used to hang the finished cone on the Christmas tree.

Loop

Glue this loop to the widest end of the cone using the impact adhesive and allow it to dry.

Loop glued to cone

Now comes the messy bit so put a sheet of newspaper down to catch the fallout. Hold the cone by the loop of thread and spray it all over with the spray adhesive. Quick as you can, sprinkle your glitter over the cone so it sticks to the glue.

Add glitter

You could leave the cone like this. It already looks "sparkly" enough to hang on a tree, but for extra effect try glueing on some brightly coloured beads with the impact adhesive.

Add beads

When all the glue has dried you can hang it up on your tree.
