UK Safari Tip:
Need help identifying birds? One of the best field guides is the "Collins Bird Guide" - available through the Amazon bookshop -  click here

Latin name: Haliaeetus albicilla

Size: Approx. 90cms. Wingspan up to 240cms.

Distribution: Rare. Found on the west coast of Scotland

Months seen: All year round

Food: Fish, rabbits and other birds

Habitat: Mainly found close to rocky coastlines

Special features: The white-tailed eagle was persecuted to extinction in the UK in the early 1800's. The birds found in Scotland today are the result of a reintroduction programme started on the Isle of Rum.

The white-tailed eagle is the largest bird of prey in the UK. The plumage is mostly brown with a pale head, and as the name suggests, adult birds have a white, wedge-shaped tail. It is unmistakable in flight with its massive barn door-like wings.
