Kingfishers by Steven Fryer

This shot was taken at Lintzford on the Derwent River where Steven Fryer took four weeks to prepare for the shot. Here's his explanation of how he got the shot...

"I'd frequently seen three kingfishers in this area so I got into the river to set the stage with perches for the kingfishers and a position where I would be. I was knee deep in the river wearing full camouflage, and just stayed put for a few hours each day, waiting for a shot I was happy with. It eventually came, but it wasn't on any of the perches I'd set up, so I had to adjust the camera on the tripod then started shooting."

The equipment used was a Canon EOS 300 SLR with a 100-400mm EF lens and a 1.4xll extender taking it to 600mm.

Steven added: "While I was there two otters passed me on a few occasions, but I was so focused on the kingfishers I didn't get any shots. Another time."
