Fungi  Birch Bracket

Latin name: Piptoporus betulinus

Size: Grows to around 15cms across.

Distribution: Found throughout the UK.

Months seen: All year round.

Habitat: Found exclusively on birch trees.

Special features: This fungus starts out all white, and when fully grown turns brown on top. When mature it has a texture similar to polystyrene, and was once used for sharpening razor blades, hence it's other name of 'razor strop fungus'. Nowadays it's also used as a canvas for pyrographers
