Latin name: Araneus diadematus
Size: Females up to 13mms, males up to 8mms.
Distribution: Found throughout the UK.
Months seen: June to October.
Habitat: Found in hedgerows, woodlands and gardens.
Food: Mostly flying insects.
Special features: Seen mostly in September and October, when the females
sit, upside-down in the centre of their large, circular webs in trees and
hedges.
 The Garden spider is sometimes called the
Cross spider because of the white '+' shaped marking on its abdomen.
 The
young spiderlings look very different, with their yellow bodies and triangular
brown abdomen patch.
 The newly emerged spiderlings remain grouped together in a ball. The slightest
disturbance sends them running in all directions.

If you can't see the spider in the centre of the web, it is probably hiding under a leaf at the edge of the web, waiting for a victim to drop in. You can encourage the spider out by tickling the strands of the web with a blade of grass. The spider will think it is a trapped fly, and come racing out.
