If there was an award for "Most Curious Looking Insect" then the bee-fly would be in with a good chance of winning it.  As the name suggests it looks like a cross between a bumble bee and a fly.  It's covered in fur, has long gangly legs, and is equipped with a proboscis as long as its body.

At this time of year you can spot them egg-laying next to small holes in the ground.  Bee Fly adults are harmless nectar feeders, while their young are carnivores, which feed on the larvae of solitary bees.
