Latin name: Emberiza schoeniclus

Size: Approximately 14 to 15cm

Distribution:
Found throughout the UK.

Months seen: June and July.

Habitat: Mainly reedbeds (hence the name) and waterside rushes. Also seen on farmland

Food: Mostly seeds. Insects in summer.

Special features: The photo above shows a female reed bunting. The male in winter looks similar, but in the summer the plumage on his head and bib is black, with a broad white collar, and narrow white moustache.

Reed buntings are fidgety birds. They tend to flick their tails and wings a lot. When disturbed from their nests they will pretend to be injured, by crawling on the ground with their wings partially open, in order to divert intruders away from the nest.
