Horse Chestnut Trees

News >   Horse Chestnut Trees >

September is the month when nearly every Horse Chestnut tree has a child standing beneath it.  Some wait patiently, while others throw sticks.  The purpose being to acquire the large, shiny brown seeds, commonly known as 'conkers'.

The conkers are collected to play a game called 'conqueror'.  The game is played by two people, each equipped with a conker threaded onto the end of a piece of string or an old boot lace.  Each player takes a turn at whacking their opponents conker with their own conker, with the purpose of smashing their opponents conker to pieces.  The winner is the player whose conker is still attached to the string.
